Tapestry___Memphis Bridge Doorway
This piece captures the entrance to the Memphis bridge, a massive steel structure reinforced with X-bracing and lined with power line arms jutting out from both sides. Down the middle, the railroad tracks pull you in, creating the feeling of a tunnel stretching into the unknown—almost eerie, yet full of movement and energy.
Using brush and ink, I worked to bring out the bold, expressive nature of the bridge. I stripped the details down to their essence, turning the structure into something almost like a symbol or character from a forgotten language. Even in this simplified form, the piece still holds a sense of speed and motion, frozen in a moment of balance.
Now, this artwork has taken on a new life as a transparent tapestry, illuminated from behind. The backlighting makes the details pop, casting dramatic shadows and emphasizing the contrast between solid structure and open space. Like the bridge itself, the piece has transformed—what started as a simple drawing is now something that glows with presence, carrying the weight and energy of something built to endure.
Beautiful compositions by Richard transforming industrial details into calligraphic backlight display.
